Last week, Corporate Knights, a sustainable-economy media and research organization, published a two-part series of articles comparing “Abundance” and “Degrowth”.

Matt Orsagh was interviewed for the article by freelance journalist Rob Csernyik. Other degrowth thought leaders such as Omer Tayyab, Marie-Josée Privyk and Christopher F. Jones. (author of The Invention of Infinite Growth) were also interviewed for the articles

The two pieces offer a thoughtful examination of the abundance vs. degrowth argument, which we think is a good entry point for many who are new to one or both of these concepts. We of course invite those who wish to learn more about degrowth to dive into more of our work at Arketa Institute and others in the degrowth world.

The “abundance” argument argues that societies can provide better lives for their citizens by eliminating bureaucracy and red tape, which would allow projects to advance at a faster pace. Those in the degrowth camp counter that the abundance argument is still a version of the “limitless” growth argument, and that to truly create a well-being economy we need to downscale resource use and production, not just make them easier to undertake.

We invite other business organizations to follow the lead of Corporate Knights and bring these conversations more out into the open so that the public is fully informed about the choices we face about the future we want.
